Can you start a media show? A challenge to all 1/17/2002 Dear Libertarian Activist: Here in Jacksonville, Doug Klippel and I have just finished filming the first episode of The Libertarian Perspective on community access television. It is a half-hour show that will air once a week (I believe it's Wednesday's at 7:00, but I have to check that). I wanted to announce it here in the forum because, while it is an idea that came to me only recently, it strikes me as a tremendously easy and cost-effective method of gaining publicity for our efforts. I would hope that everyone involved with the Libertarianism would consider implementing a similar program on e.g. their cable system. Some things to consider: 1. It's completely free. We haven't paid a dime. 2. It's NOT time consuming. I spent a total of about 30 minutes on the phone setting this up with the phone company. I spent about 30 more minutes bouncing ideas for the show off Doug via email. It then took us an hour of in-studio time to tape a 30-minute show. 3. It has incredible reach - everyone who subscribes to cable television. 4. With a few exceptions, you are completely in control of the format. You can't do direct fundraising, recruiting, or selling, but it's pretty open beyond that. You can have guests and you can decide what to talk about. 5. It's a great "training ground" for party members to learn how to better communicate party principles. With our weekly radio show in Jacksonville, we've found that a few sessions behind a live mic will make you a much more confident, articulate advocate for freedom. I think our TV program will only exacerbate that effect. Of course, I'm not sure if this opportunity is open to everybody. I don't know if every cable company offers a community access station and even if they do, they must have an opening for you in the schedule. I also think that other cable stations might have different prerequisites before you can do your own show? As for exposure, I realize that community access isn't exactly the most-watched channel in town but you won't find any more cost- effective advertising. (Did I mention that it's FREE?) The program manager at the cable company tells me that we will probably be surprised to find out how many people will see us on our show. According to him, most people won't bother to tune in for a specific community access show, and they probably won't sit down and watch the whole show (probably five minutes or so), but a lot of people will see you and hear some of your message while they are channel surfing. He says that after a while, people in the store start to look at you with that I-know-I've-seen-you-somewhere look. So my challenge is simple. If you, or someone in your county, hasn't already explored the community access option, please do so. It could be an incredibly cheap and effective tool to spread the message.
